Buddy vs. X-Tension: Which Is Right for Your Van

Buddy vs. X-Tension: Which Is Right for Your Van

Both the Buddy and the X-Tension attach to the keder rail of your existing roll-out canopy. Both create an enclosed outdoor living space next to your van. Both are made by Isabella. They are not the same product. The core difference is structure and flexibility. The Buddy integrates with your roll-out canopy to form a room that uses the roll-out canopy itself as its roof. The X-Tension inflates into a freestanding structure that connects to your van via a separate tunnel, and can be left standing when you drive away. This article walks through the differences directly.

What Both Products Have in Common

Both the Buddy and the X-Tension require a functioning roll-out canopy with a keder channel. Thule, Fiamma, Carefree, and Dometic roll-out canopies all carry this channel. If your van does not have one of these awnings installed, neither product can be set up.

Both products add roughly equivalent living space to your van setup. Both are designed for enjoying the outdoors in standard conditions.

Understanding this shared foundation matters before comparing the two. The decision is not about which product works with your roll-out canopy. Both do. The decision is about how you want to camp.

The Structural Difference

The Buddy connects to the front and sides of your roll-out awning. The roll-out awning forms the roof of the room. Your van body forms the rear wall. The Buddy contributes the three remaining walls and connects to the roll-out canopy's underside. The room cannot stand without the roll-out canopy deployed.

The X-Tension also connects to the keder channel, but uses that connection only for positioning and your roll-out awning stays retracted. The structure itself is an inflatable air beam frame that stands independently. A separate piece called the Tunnel slides into the keder rail and then zips onto the rear face of the X-Tension, sealing the passageway between van and room.

In the Buddy, the roll-out canopy is load-bearing. In the X-Tension, the roll-out canopy is a reference point.

The Freedom to Drive Away

This is the most practical difference between the two products.

When you use the Buddy, the roll-out canopy must remain extended for the room to stand. The room and awning are structurally linked. If you want to drive somewhere, you pack down the Buddy and retract the roll-out canopy.

When you use the X-Tension, the room stands on its own once inflated and pegged. To leave camp, you unzip the Tunnel from the rear of the X-Tension, remove the tunnel from your roll-out canopy, and drive. The X-Tension remains standing. When you return, you re-install the tunnel to your roll-out canopy, and zip it back onto the X-Tension.

For van campers who want to use their site as a base while exploring the surrounding area by vehicle, the X-Tension is a materially different product in daily use.

Setup Differences

Buddy setup involves threading the keder bead, installing the side panels via the spring loaded Carbon-X poles and pegging the perimeter. The awning is integral to the structure throughout.

X-Tension setup involves sliding the Tunnel into the keder channel, laying the room flat, inflating in two stages to 9 to 11 psi (pump is supplied), zipping the Tunnel onto the room, pegging the base, staking the guy ropes if conditions require.

Experienced users report consistent 10 to 15 minute setups for both products. The processes are different, not one clearly faster than the other.

The Tunnel Selection

The X-Tension requires a Tunnel that matches your van's profile. The Tunnel is sized by the height and shape of your van's side opening. Selecting the wrong Tunnel results in a connection that won’t clear your sliding doors opening.

For the U.S. market, the two most common Tunnel variants are:

  • Van Tunnel (93'' to 97'' height) — Ford Transit, RAM ProMaster and similar full-size panel van platforms

  • Van High Tunnel (100'' to 110'' height) — for Mercedes Sprinter and high-roof builds

Three additional variants cover VW California-type builds, mid-size MPV-based conversions, and vehicles with sloping rooflines. See Article 1.4 for the full Tunnel selection guide.

The Buddy has no equivalent variable. Front panel size is the only selection, based on your roll-out canopy's extended width.

Materials and Structure Feel

The Buddy uses Isacryl (295 g/m2), Isabella's fiber-dyed acrylic canvas. The fabric is heavier than synthetic alternatives, breathes well, and minimizes condensation buildup inside the room. Colors are stable over years of sun exposure because the dye runs through the thread, not on the surface.

The X-Tension uses IsaLite (195 g/m2), a lighter technical acrylic canvas suited to inflatable construction. The air beam structure creates a noticeably different feel inside. The room is quieter than a traditional canvas room in wind because the inflatable frame absorbs rather than rigidly resists gusts.

Wind Stability

The Buddy, connected to a properly deployed roll-out canopy and pegged at the base, has a mechanical stability advantage on exposed sites. The awning cassette anchors the top of the structure at height, and the van body provides one fully rigid wall. The remaining panels have little surface area for wind to push against.

The X-Tension is held by base pegs and guy ropes staked at diagonal angles. In moderate to windy conditions this is stable. If you are unable to peg your X-tension, erection during windy conditions should be considered.

The Honest Tradeoff

The Buddy is modular solution solution for buyers who camp on one site, in one place, without needing to move the vehicle during their stay. It uses your roll-out canopy structure rather than duplicating it.

The X-Tension is the correct product for buyers who use their van as a base for exploration. Unzip the tunnel, drive off for the day, return to a standing room and an occupied site. That is a different way of camping, and the X-Tension exists specifically to enable it.

Both products are honest about their tradeoffs. Neither is pretending to be the other.

Confirming Your Order

For the Buddy, confirm:

  • Your awning is Thule, Fiamma, Carefree, or Dometic brand

  • Your awning's extended width, then select the matching front panel size (106'' or 126'')

  • Your rail height is between 77'' and 84''

For the X-Tension, confirm:

  • Your awning is Thule, Fiamma, Carefree, or Dometic brand

  • Your van platform and height, then select the matching Tunnel (Van or Van High)
