Seasonal Storage

Seasonal Storage

Most damage to Isabella products does not happen during the season. It happens in the off-season, when gear is packed away without the preparation that keeps it in good condition through months of dormancy.

Mildew, degraded impregnation, corrosion, and permanent creasing are the four most common problems. All four are preventable. None of them require significant time or effort to avoid. What they require is doing the right things in the right order before the gear goes away for the winter.

This guide covers how to store Isabella fabric products, poles, frames, carpets, and furniture correctly for extended off-season periods.

The One Rule That Covers Everything

Nothing goes into storage damp. Not slightly damp. Not probably dry. Fully dry.

This applies to every product in this guide without exception. Moisture trapped in a storage bag or container for weeks or months creates mildew. Mildew grows into the fabric structure and degrades the fibers from the inside. It is not a surface stain. Once established, it cannot be fully removed. It shortens the life of the product and, in serious cases, ends it.

If you are packing up at the end of a trip in wet weather and cannot dry everything on site, store products loosely in your vehicle or garage with ventilation until they are fully dry before final storage. Bundling damp fabric tightly creates exactly the conditions mildew needs. Store loosely.

Isacryl Fabric: Awnings, Buddy Panels, Camp-let Canvas

Clean before you store. Dirt and debris left on Isacryl over winter provides nutrients for mildew and holds moisture against the fabric surface. IsaGuide Caring for Isacryl Fabric covers cleaning in detail. The short version: brush off loose debris, wash with clean water and a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry completely before folding.

Do not use soap, detergent, or household cleaners. They strip the impregnation that makes Isacryl waterproof. IsaClean is the correct cleaning product if water alone is insufficient.

Re-impregnate only when the fabric tells you to. The signal is water behavior: performing fabric beads water into droplets that run off cleanly. When water spreads and soaks in instead, the impregnation needs restoration. If your fabric is still beading correctly at end of season, storage is all it needs. If it is not, re-impregnate before storing using AquaTex reproofing spray. Apply to the inside of the fabric, not the outside. The awning must be clean and fully dry before applying. Treatment applied over dirt or damp fabric will not adhere correctly.

Fold loosely, not tightly. Isacryl is woven fabric. Sharp, permanent folds applied under pressure over months can stress the weave at the crease. Fold the fabric into broad, soft folds rather than tight creases, and avoid stacking heavy items on top of stored fabric.

Store in breathable bags, not sealed plastic. Plastic bags trap any residual moisture vapor and create humid micro-environments. Isabella awning bags are designed to allow some airflow. If you use your own storage, canvas or fabric bags are preferable to sealed plastic containers.

Poles and Frames: CarbonX, IXL, and Aluminum

Clean pole sections before storage. Wipe them down with a dry cloth to remove dirt, condensation, and any salt residue from coastal use. Check the connector mechanisms, including the push-button locks and FiXon clips, and make sure they are free of debris before storing.

Check pole sections for damage. End-of-season is the right time to identify any cracked or bent sections that will need replacement before next season. A cracked fiberglass pole section that is discovered in storage can be ordered and replaced before the first trip of the year. The same section discovered during setup at a campsite cannot.

Store poles in their bags. Pole bags protect against scratches and keep sections organized. Storing poles loose increases the chance of damage during the off-season and makes the following season's setup slower.

Aluminum furniture frames, including the Thor Chair, Director's Chair, and Folding Table, do not require special treatment beyond wiping clean and storing dry. Check riveted joints and locking mechanisms before storage and replace any hardware that shows wear before it becomes a problem in the field.

Windscreens

Windscreens use Light Isacryl fabric, which follows the same care and storage principles as heavier Isacryl products. Clean, re-impregnate, and store dry in breathable bags.

The pole system, including CarbonX poles, guy ropes, and Stabilo anchors, should be cleaned, dried, and stored in the provided carry bags. Check the Stabilo pegs for bending or corrosion. Bent pegs are worth replacing before storage rather than discovering at a campsite.

Coil guy ropes loosely rather than bundling them tightly. Tight bundles held under tension over winter can create permanent kinks that weaken the rope at the bend points.

A Simple End-of-Season Sequence

The easiest time to clean your Isabella products is at your last camp of the year, while the frame is still installed and the fabric is fully accessible.

With everything pitched, brush off loose debris, wash with clean water and a soft brush, and rinse thoroughly. Check water beading behavior while the fabric is wet. If water is spreading and soaking in rather than beading off cleanly, apply AquaTex to the inside of the fabric before you pack down. The awning must be clean and dry before applying, so clean first, allow to dry, then treat.

Once home, the sequence is straightforward:
  • Confirm everything is fully dry before final storage

  • Clean and inspect poles, frames, and hardware. Order any replacements now.

  • Coil guy ropes loosely and pack all pole bags

  • Store everything in breathable bags in a cool, dark, dry location
